Testing a real property connection

The UeeVii CPE450 WiFi bridges were tested on a large, multi-acre property belonging to TechManPat’s parents-in-law. One unit was positioned near the house, while the second was taken down a steep driveway. The aim was to test a practical connection rather than an unobstructed, clear line-of-sight setup.

Trees stood between the two locations, making the test relevant to properties where a direct cable run would be difficult or expensive. Before moving the equipment, the connection was recorded at approximately 26Mbps download and 41Mbps upload.

Setup and power options

The bridge has indicator lights on the side to show power and connection strength. It includes power over Ethernet as well as a DC power input. For the driveway test, the unit was connected using a long power lead and placed on a post near an existing power box.

The setup was described as temporary and not representative of a finished installation. A taller post could place the bridge higher, while a weatherproof enclosure would be appropriate for equipment installed permanently near a gate. The device could also be powered through Ethernet, avoiding the need to use the DC power brick at the remote location.

Signal through the trees

The first position near the driveway did not produce a signal. After moving the unit closer to the power box by approximately one or two metres, the bridge connected successfully. This showed that the location and obstruction had a significant effect on the result.

At the working position, the test recorded a 5 millisecond ping, approximately 2.8Mbps download and 2.4Mbps upload. The unit was not mounted above the trees, so the connection was operating through the vegetation. The result was much slower than the earlier connection near the house, but it was still considered adequate for the intended applications.

Potential uses around a gate

A wireless bridge could extend the home network to a gate without running a long network cable. One suggested use is a smart gate, where the available connection only needs to support control functions rather than high-speed internet access.

The bridge could also connect a Raspberry Pi or similar device, along with a camera or multiple IP cameras. This could allow a property owner to monitor the entrance, receive notifications when someone arrives, or install a video doorbell at the gate. Power over Ethernet could simplify the installation by carrying network data and power to compatible equipment.

TechManPat’s conclusion

I thought this was a useful real-world test because the bridge was not operating above the trees and initially needed to be moved before it found a signal. The final speeds were not high, but in my view they were suitable for a smart gate, IP cameras or a video doorbell. For a permanent installation, I would use a taller post and weatherproof housing, which could also improve the connection.
