What an NBN provider can and cannot change

Your home connects to the NBN, and your retail service provider takes over from its point of interconnect before carrying traffic towards the wider internet. That gives an RSP room to influence parts of the journey, but it also creates clear limits.

A provider cannot move your home closer to a game server, change the distance between Australian cities or fix poor Wi-Fi from its own network. For example, a player in Perth connecting to a Sydney server still has to deal with the physical distance between those locations.

Routing can make a real difference

Traffic does not always follow the same path through the internet. Providers use different upstream networks, interconnects and peering arrangements, so one RSP may reach a game server through a cleaner route than another.

That can produce a measurable difference. The video gives the example of one provider reaching a Sydney game server in 45 milliseconds while another takes 52 milliseconds. This is a genuine improvement, but it is optimisation rather than magic. A better route may be like finding a more efficient road, not inventing teleportation.

Stability matters more than marketing claims

Gaming performance is not only about the lowest ping shown at an idle moment. A consistent 30 milliseconds can feel better than a connection that repeatedly jumps between 25 and 80 milliseconds. These variations, known as jitter, can make a game feel delayed or unreliable.

Network congestion is especially important during busy evening periods. If a provider has purchased enough capacity and operates a well-managed network, it may keep latency more stable when many customers are online. That is a meaningful benefit, although it is a general network-quality issue rather than something inherently exclusive to gaming services.

QoS and the home network

Traffic prioritisation, usually provided through quality-of-service features, can give gaming traffic priority when a connection is busy. This may help when someone is downloading a large update, uploading files or streaming while another person is playing.

However, QoS is not necessarily a unique feature of a gaming RSP. Some routers, including models available through mainstream retailers, can provide similar controls. Home networking can also be the real source of problems. Gaming over Wi-Fi through walls, while other devices are streaming or downloading, can create lag regardless of the RSP.

Ethernet may make a bigger difference than changing providers. Bufferbloat can also add substantial delay when a connection is under load, turning an idle 20-millisecond ping into around 150 milliseconds during a large download or upload. A better router and cleaner home setup may help address this.

What to check before switching

Before paying more for a gaming-branded plan, check the fundamentals. Improve Wi-Fi or use Ethernet where possible, review the router, manage heavy household traffic and choose game servers that are geographically closer. Access to fibre to the premises can also make a major difference where it is available.

A mainstream RSP with sufficient NBN capacity and a well-managed network may already deliver the routing and stability improvements promoted by gaming-focused providers. The important question is whether the provider has invested in infrastructure to support its customer base, particularly during peak periods.

My view is that gaming RSPs are not completely fake, but the branding is often more dramatic than the underlying technology. Better routing, capacity and latency stability can improve gaming, yet a gaming label cannot overcome distance, poor Wi-Fi, household congestion or the limits of the wider internet. I would fix the home network and investigate the provider’s real network performance before assuming a gaming plan offers a special competitive advantage.
