A distinctive transparent design

The DJI ROMO P immediately stands out from conventional robot vacuums with its transparent design. The internal dust pathways, water sections, roller area and ducting are visible, making the appliance look more like a piece of exposed robotic hardware than a standard cleaning product.

That design will not suit everyone. In a normally lit home, the visible internal layout can look busy, but it is likely to appeal to people who enjoy transparent technology. The P is also the more premium version of the ROMO range. In addition to its design, it includes an extra deodoriser and cleaning solution that the standard versions do not have.

Obstacle avoidance is the standout feature

The ROMO P’s strongest performance is its obstacle avoidance. DJI uses dual fish-eye vision sensors and three solid-state LiDAR units, with DJI claiming detection of cables as thin as 2 mm.

In testing, the robot avoided loose cables, clutter, chair legs, toys and other common obstacles with very little supervision. This is important in everyday use because a robot vacuum is most useful when it can be sent out without first preparing the entire room or rescuing it from trouble.

Cleaning and carpet performance

The robot has 25,000 pascals of suction. On hard floors, it picked up everyday dust, dirt, hair, crumbs, dog fur and larger debris effectively. The dual anti-tangle roller arrangement also helped manage long hair without leaving the underside heavily wrapped.

Carpet performance was less conclusive. The ROMO P was described as fine to good, but some residue remained in places, particularly on deep carpet and awkward edge transitions. It is therefore better suited to homes with mixed flooring than to someone seeking the strongest possible deep-carpet cleaning.

Convenient everyday mopping

Mopping is another strong area for the ROMO P. Its dual spinning mop pads handled regular dirt, light marks and kitchen traffic well, making them suitable for maintaining already-clean hard floors. The onboard water tank is listed in the review as 164 ml, allowing the robot to mop for longer before returning to the dock.

The dock washes and dries the mop pads and manages the dirty water. DJI claims up to 200 days of maintenance-free use from the base station, although the review notes that the actual period will depend on how often the robot runs and how dirty the floors are.

The spinning pads are relatively straightforward to clean and replace, and they avoid some of the buildup concerns associated with roller-style mop systems. However, they can leave material behind around edges or when dealing with tougher residue. The mopping is best understood as convenient daily maintenance rather than a replacement for a deep manual clean.

App, battery and noise

The app is polished, with quick mapping and customisation for rooms, routines, suction, water use and obstacle settings. Camera and microphone functions are available for remote viewing and control, but they must be explicitly enabled in the app and protected with a password.

Battery life was strong during normal daily cleaning. Sensible path planning helped the robot avoid wasting time and return to the dock reliably. The review also found the ROMO P relatively easy to live with acoustically at its lower settings. It remains audible, and higher suction is louder, but it does not produce an especially harsh vacuum sound.
