What is a Lighthouse Factory?

TechManPat visited Midea’s chiller factory in Chongqing, China, described in the video as the world’s first Lighthouse Factory in the chiller sector. The World Economic Forum uses the Lighthouse designation for manufacturing sites applying advanced digital tools, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics and sustainable energy practices.

The video says only about 150 factories worldwide had received the designation from a pool of approximately 100,000 factories. Midea’s Chongqing facility joined the list in March 2024, making it an example of how digital manufacturing can be applied at a large industrial site.

Industry 4.0 on the factory floor

TechManPat’s conclusion

I found the Chongqing tour an eye-opening look at where HVAC manufacturing is heading. In my view, the combination of AI, robotics and magnetic levitation shows that even a fairly mundane industry such as air conditioning is moving towards more automated, efficient and technology-driven production. The shift appears to be less about eliminating every human role and more about reducing repetitive work while increasing supervision and technical responsibilities.
