Capacity, outputs and battery technology

The Bluetti AC70 has a 768Wh capacity and uses lithium iron phosphate, or LiFePO4, batteries. Bluetti states that the battery should retain more than 80% capacity after about 3,000 charge cycles. The video describes this as roughly eight years of daily discharge and recharge, although actual lifespan depends on use and maintenance.

Its pure sine wave inverter provides two AC outlets with 1,000W of continuous output and 2,000W of surge capacity. There are also two USB-C ports rated at up to 100W each, two USB-A ports with a combined 12W output, and a 12V DC car outlet.

UPS performance and failover testing

The AC70's main point of difference is its UPS function, with a stated changeover time of 20 milliseconds. Pat tested it with a desktop PC, modem, server and 3D printer. The changeover was described as seamless, with no interruptions, errors or noticeable effect on a 3D print.

That speed should suit many home-office and small-server applications, particularly where a short power interruption could cause a computer or network device to shut down. The video also notes that some highly sensitive equipment may require switching at 5ms or faster, so the AC70 should not automatically be treated as a replacement for every specialised UPS.

Charging and expansion

AC charging supports up to 950W. Bluetti states that the AC70 can reach 80% charge in about 45 minutes and a full charge takes approximately 1.3 to 1.6 hours. Solar input supports up to 500W, with an estimated recharge time of about 2.8 to 3.3 hours under suitable conditions. It can also charge from 12V or 24V vehicle outlets.

Pass-through charging is supported, allowing devices to run while the AC70 is charging. However, it can only charge from one source at a time, so AC and solar charging cannot be combined. Bluetti's B80, B230 and B300 batteries can be used as alternative charging sources, but they do not provide fully integrated capacity expansion.

Practical features and limitations

The AC70 includes a grounding bolt that can be connected to a grounding rod or vehicle chassis. The video highlights this for use in damp environments and with high-powered devices that have metal casings. Pat also tested the grounding connection with an amplifier and reported no audible noise while it was connected. A replaceable fuse beside the AC input provides additional protection against surges and faults.

There are some compromises. The AC70 has only two AC outlets, no built-in emergency light and no wireless charging pad. It also has no IP rating for water or dust resistance, meaning it needs care in rough outdoor conditions. App control is limited to a short-range Bluetooth connection because Wi-Fi is not included.

At 10.2kg, it is relatively heavy as a portable unit and is not especially convenient to carry in a backpack. On the other hand, the inverter handled demanding loads including kettles, induction cooktops and power tools. Running an induction cooktop at about 1,000W could provide approximately two to three meals, according to the testing, although high-power appliances drain the battery quickly.

Value compared with a conventional UPS

The review compares the AC70 with a PowerShield Defender 2kVA UPS, which was stated to provide 5.5 minutes of runtime at 50% load and take six hours to recharge to about 90%. The comparison does not account for that UPS's overload protection, 6ms switching time or higher voltage output.

The AC70 was priced at about $1,000 in Australia at full price, with a Black Friday price of $799 mentioned in the video. Its combination of battery capacity, fast charging, portable outputs and UPS operation was presented as strong value for home backup and occasional outdoor use.

I give the Bluetti AC70 a thumbs up. Its 20ms UPS performance, 2,000W surge capacity and LiFePO4 battery make it a versatile option for home backup, small servers, camping and emergency use. It is heavy, lacks weather resistance and may not suit equipment that needs an extremely fast UPS changeover, but I found it difficult to fault for the intended uses and considered it an excellent deal at the prices discussed.
