What is included in the box

The Natural Titanium iPhone 16 Pro Max arrives in a notably small box. The phone is supplied without headphones or a charging brick, continuing Apple’s approach of reducing the accessories included with the handset. Pat also points out that the smaller packaging allows more phones to fit into the same shipping space, potentially reducing transport requirements and costs.

A braided USB-C cable is included. Pat describes it as fairly long and appreciates the construction, particularly the lack of a rubber section near the cable ends. He is uncertain about how durable it will be, but says it is a cable he expects to use. The box also contains a SIM removal tool.

Natural Titanium design

The Natural Titanium finish is presented as a light, silver-toned colour with a mostly matte appearance. The Apple logo is slightly shinier than the surrounding surface, while the camera area blends into the rear panel but remains visibly outlined.

The phone has three rear cameras, a large display and a centrally aligned USB-C port. The lower edge also includes openings for the speaker and microphone, while antenna bands appear around the frame. The silver trim runs around the handset and blends with the rest of the design.

The Australian version shown in the unboxing includes a physical SIM card tray. Pat notes that this is different from US models, which do not include the same tray.

Buttons and camera control

The iPhone 16 Pro Max includes the familiar volume controls and lock button, along with the new camera control on the side. Although Apple does not want to describe it simply as a button, it provides a physical click and is used to control camera functions.

The control can open or operate the camera, adjust zoom and take photographs. Pat finds its position somewhat awkward when taking photos vertically, as the phone has to be held around that side control. He considers it more natural when the phone is held horizontally, which he notes is common for many photos.

Display and software

Once switched on, the iPhone 16 Pro Max has noticeably smaller bezels than older models, although Pat says the difference is easier to see when the phones are compared side by side. The handset runs iOS 18 in the unboxing video.

Apple Intelligence is identified as the major expected feature for this generation. At the time of recording, its release on 28 October 2024 was described as a rumour. Pat says the effect of Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 16 Pro Max could not yet be assessed and would require a later look once the feature became available.
