Why the standard pivot struggled

The Samsung 57-inch G9 is both large and strongly curved. When mounted on the older Ergotron HX arm with its standard or HD pivot, the screen could sag. The curvature also places more of the monitor’s weight towards the front, increasing the load on the pivot.

The VHD Pivot is intended to address this problem. It is a larger version of the pivot mechanism, with a thicker internal spring and a larger metal bar. The standard pivot could be adjusted for spring pressure, but the older setup still required an improvised screw to help prevent it from bending when supporting the 57-inch screen.

What has changed from the older arm

The base and the first arm section are largely the same between the older and newer versions. The main visible changes are the plastic inserts replacing metallic-looking inserts in some areas, along with the larger pivot mount on the spring arm.

The VHD Pivot itself is significantly larger than the standard pivot. It includes a rear pin for adjusting the spring strength, allowing the pressure to be set for the monitor being used. The new mechanism is intended to provide the additional support needed by heavier, curved displays.

Specifications and installation

The arm supports a screen up to and including 57 inches, with a stated capacity between 28.7 and 37.5 pounds, or approximately 13 to 17 kilograms. It can lift the screen by up to 11.5 inches, or 29.2 centimetres, tilt by about 25 degrees, pan by 180 degrees and rotate by 20 degrees.

The monitor connection uses a VESA MIS-D mount and the product has a 10-year warranty. The supplied hardware includes screws for attaching the monitor and pivot, spare screws and tools. The arm can be installed using a desk-edge mount, or with a grommet mount. The grommet option uses a plate and large bolt, allowing the arm to be positioned through the desk rather than only at its edge.

Cable management limitation

The cable management system is one of the less successful parts of the design. The small plastic pieces that hold the cables in place can become very tight when several cables are routed through them.

Thicker HDMI and DisplayPort cables can make the problem more noticeable. Moving the monitor may cause the cable-management pieces to pop out, particularly when the display is being used with several connections or as a KVM.

Using it with the Samsung 57-inch G9

The VHD Pivot was tested with the Samsung 57-inch G9 and was described as providing the adjustment and support expected from a monitor arm. It allows the display to be mounted on an arm while retaining control over its position, which was not reliably possible with the older pivot.

At the time of the video, the VHD version was out of stock at the Australian retailers linked in the description. The video also indicated a price of approximately $534 to $550 in Australia. The description noted that, as far as could be determined, the pivot could not be purchased separately.

TechManPat’s conclusion

I think the Ergotron VHD Pivot is a very strong solution for the Samsung 57-inch G9 and similarly large, curved screens. It took some time to arrive, but I believe it solves the sagging problem and provides the control that the older 49-inch G9 setup offered. I can highly recommend it, while noting that the cable management remains frustrating and availability may be limited.
