Design and wireless features

The ASUS RT-AXE7800 is a bulky router with a design that stands out. Its tri-band setup provides 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz wireless networks, which can be configured separately or combined under one SSID using Smart Connect.

WiFi 6E adds access to the 6 GHz spectrum, providing additional capacity and non-overlapping channels. This can help reduce interference and improve throughput when many devices are using the network. However, compatible client devices must support WiFi 6E, not simply WiFi 6, to make use of the 6 GHz band.

6 GHz range and placement

The 6 GHz band showed the main limitation of WiFi 6E in this testing. Its range was noticeably shorter, with very low or no speeds in parts of the home. Ping and jitter remained acceptable, but speeds became inconsistent outside the stronger coverage area.

The recommended placement is as central as possible, away from walls. The router can also be wall-mounted, although the antennas are not adjustable and cables may remain visible. Two units can be used to create an ASUS AiMesh network, which may improve coverage across a larger home.

Software, security and mesh support

The web interface includes controls for the wireless bands, guest networks, AiMesh, parental controls, quality of service, traffic analysis, USB functions and VPN features. VPN Fusion allows different client devices to be assigned to different VPN tunnels.

The ASUS Router app provides access to connected devices, network information, mesh configuration, security insights and family controls. Game mode can prioritise traffic for gaming devices. Security tools use Trend Micro, while voice-control support includes Alexa through the available interfaces. The review describes the web interface as dated, but finds the app easier to use.

AiMesh is a key feature for households that already use ASUS networking equipment. Compatible ASUS routers can be combined into one mesh system, potentially providing a more flexible alternative to buying a dedicated mesh kit.

I would recommend the ASUS RT-AXE7800 for a medium-sized home when it can be placed centrally, particularly because its 5 GHz performance is strong, its 2.5 GbE port supports faster connections and ASUS AiMesh provides useful expansion options. I do not see 6 GHz as a game changer for every home, because its range is limited, but I still consider the router a good choice for people who already use ASUS devices or want to build an ASUS mesh network.
